Mexico‘s Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) will acquire the first five Embraer E195-E2 aircraft in 2025.
As part of its fleet modernization plan, on June 24, 2025, the technical acceptance of the first state-of-the-art Embraer E195-E2 aircraft took place, marking a strategic milestone for the Mexican State Airline.
Embraer E195-E2 aircraft
This event was formalized through a ceremony on June 27 at Embraer’s facilities in San José dos Campos, Brazil.
The aircraft arrived in Mexico via AIFA on July 1, 2025. It then began commercial operations on August 25. During this period, the expansion plan moved forward. The second E195-E2 unit landed on August 9, and the third on August 23. By the end of the year, the fleet will have five Embraer E195-E2 aircraft.
On the other hand, Sedena could use the E195-E2 for personnel transport, rapid troop mobilization, and logistical support. It would also be useful for airlifts, transporting supplies, humanitarian evacuations, civil protection tasks, and official flights within the country.
In addition, according to El Economista, the agency increased its investment requirement this year by 887.5 million pesos to purchase 20 aircraft, as well as equipment and tools for ground operations. In total, Sedena is now requesting 21.7592 billion pesos to strengthen the Mexican State Airline (Mexicana de Aviación).
Features
The Embraer E195-E2, the Brazilian company’s largest commercial aircraft, has made a leap in efficiency. It now consumes between 10% and 12.5% less fuel than its main competitor. In addition, it is the quietest in its category, making it an attractive option in light of regulations seeking to reduce noise pollution at large airports.
To measure its environmental impact, Embraer conducted a Life Cycle Assessment in 2022. This determined the carbon footprint of the E195-E2 and analyzed emissions from the extraction of raw materials to the end of production. The exercise marks a key step on the road to its goal of carbon neutrality by 2040.
The E195-E2 also offers operational advantages. It consumes less fuel, incorporates quieter Pratt & Whitney engines, and operates at a lower cost per seat. It also features a spacious cabin with a capacity for 146 passengers, modern avionics, and a range of nearly 4,800 kilometers. The Embraer E195-E2 is therefore shaping up to be an ideal aircraft for new-generation regional routes.
