Canada, Turkey and Mexico were the leading egg exporters to the United States in the first quarter of 2025.
The U.S. import market totaled $57.5 million in the first quarter of 2025.
In the United States, 284 eggs are consumed per capita. This amount is lower compared to consumption in Mexico (391), Argentina (363) and Colombia (343). And higher compared to Japan (320).
Egg exporters to the United States
According to a U.S. congressional analysis, some stakeholders have suggested that imported eggs could supplement the domestic supply.
However, the perishability and fragility of shell eggs make them difficult to transport internationally.
Below is the ranking of the top egg exporters to the United States in the first quarter of 2025, in thousands of dollars:
- Canada:14,170.
- Turkey: 13,310.
- Mexico: 9,731.
- United Kingdom: 6,595.
- China: 3,912.
- Brazil: 1,754.
Tariffs
Many countries do not have surpluses of ready-to-export eggs, unlike products such as grains.
In addition, the U.S. requires strict food safety standards that not all countries meet, such as washing and refrigerating shell eggs.
In 2024, only Turkey exported shell eggs to the United States, and in 2025, Mexico joined.
FSIS authorized Canada, Lithuania and the Netherlands to export egg products. Other countries, such as Poland and Indonesia, have shown interest. In parallel, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on multiple trading partners, including eggs and egg products, through the IEEPA Act, which some lawmakers are seeking to limit.
