The global ranking of the top pork in the world producers in 2024 was led by China.

By far, the Asian giant dominates the global pork market: its production was 56.75 million tons. However, this volume fell by 2.1% compared to 2023.

The reason? Among the main causes are the liquidation of breeding sows and market consolidation.

Pork producers in the world

Pork is the most consumed protein worldwide. China, the United States and the European Union lead the main markets. Together, they account for a large part of global demand.

According to the USDA, the world pork herd will reach 734.7 million head in 2024. In addition, pork production reached 116 million tons.

This is the world’s top-5 pork producers in 2024, in millions of tons and year-on-year growth rates, according to data from the USDA and the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA):

  • China: 56.75 (-2.1 percent).
  • European Union: 21.25 (+2.0 percent).
  • United States: 12.68 (+2.4 percent).
  • Brazil: 5.31 (+2.9 percent).
  • Russia: 4.1 (+3.5 percent).

Growing consumption

Pork is a very versatile protein. It offers a wide variety of cuts and flavor profiles.  In addition, it adapts easily to different preparations.

Unlike other meat proteins, pork is consumed throughout the day.

From breakfast to dinner, it is always present on the table. Bacon, sausages and ham are common examples.  These products are part of every meal.

Moreover, according to the U.S. National Pork Board, bacon leads the market. It is, without a doubt, the most valued packaged meat product by consumers.

On the other hand, the company Smithfield Foods affirms that pork is one of the most consumed meats in the country. It is even the most widely used ingredient in U.S. pizzas

It also stands out as the main component in canned and cured meat products. In fact, cured sausages account for most of this category.

On top of this, demand for international cuisines continues to rise in the United States. This shift is driving growth in the pork market.

In particular, Asian and Mexican cuisines are gaining ground. Both use pork as a primary protein. This phenomenon is most evident among younger consumers. Generation Z (ages 12-27) and Millennials (ages 28-43) are leading this trend.
