Top 10 products imported by Mexico

The top consumer-oriented products imported by Mexico in 2022 were pork, dairy, poultry (except eggs), beef, and food preparations.

This list also includes fresh fruit, processed vegetables, bakery/cereal products, condiments/sauces, and wine.

Mexico is the third most populous nation in the Americas, with 126 million inhabitants, as reported by Inegi in its 2020 Population and Housing Census.

Mexico is generally classified as an upper-middle-income developing country.

According to Inegi, there are 217,477 economic units registered under the «Food, Beverage and Tobacco Manufacturing» classification, which includes offices, manufacturing plants and distribution centers.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that 2.05 million people were employed in this sector in the second quarter of the current year, of which 51.1% were women.

According to the Asociación Nacional de Tiendas de Autoservicio y Departamentales (ANTAD), in 2022 there were 24 supermarket chains, with 3,333 stores.

Supermarkets account for 15.2% of retail sales, while 57.3% is covered by traditional commerce (family stores, public and open-air markets) and the rest by specialty and convenience stores.

ANTAD reported that retail sales in supermarkets grew 12.5% in 2022.

Imported products

Mexico is currently the world’s fourteenth largest economy, a developing country with relative macroeconomic stability, multiple trade agreements and a diversified manufacturing base.

Among Mexico’s most prominent sector imports in 2022 are: dairy products ($2.812 billion), pork ($2.626 billion), poultry ($1.717 billion), and beef ($809 million).

The USDA notes that Mexico is the third largest export market for U.S. agricultural and related products ($29.6 billion in 2022).

The United States purchases approximately 80% of all Mexican agricultural exports and provides Mexico with 70% of its imports.
