The 10 largest customs in Mexico by number of operations

Nuevo Laredo, Tijuana and Ciudad Juárez led the ranking of the largest customs in Mexico by number of operations in 2019.

Nuevo Laredo customs added 4 million 340,000 operations, covering 23.1% of total operations.

Customs has a strategic role for Mexico, which occupies position 11 among the largest exporting economies and 12 among importers in the world, while its external sales are equivalent to 38% of its GDP and of every dollar it exports to its neighbor to the north, 40 cents is US input.

Other relevant customs in Mexico in 2019 were: Mexico City International Airport, Ciudad Reynosa, Colombia, Manzanillo, Nogales, Guadalajara and Piedras Negras.

In sum, the 10 main customs offices in Mexico carried out 13 million 929,000 operations last year, 74.2% of the total.

Customs in Mexico

The General Customs Administration (AGA), a dependency of the Tax Administration Service (SAT), is the entity in charge, among other things, of facilitating and controlling the entry and exit of merchandise from Mexican territory, as well as collecting tariffs and other rights in trade matter.

Mexico maintains six types of customs regimes: definitive import; temporary import; tax deposit; internal or international transit of goods; elaboration, transformation or repair in a controlled area; and strategic supervised enclosure.

Mexico’s main export trading partners are the United States, Canada, China, and Germany, and several other countries located in the European Union, South America, and East Asia also represent important export trading partners.

Since 2014, Mexico’s total industrial manufacturing production has increased significantly. This expansion was primarily due to an increase in the manufacture of primary metals and in the manufactured metal products and transportation equipment sectors, as well as an increase in manufacturing exports to the United States.

Although automotive exports maintained a positive trend, other manufacturing exports continued to grow more slowly.
