Mayan train will cost between 120,000 and 150,000 million pesos

The federal government of Mexico reported that the Mayan Train project will require an investment of between 120,000 and 150,000 million pesos.

On December 16, 2019, indigenous communities in the Yucatán Peninsula voted to approve the Tren Maya development project.

The Mayan Train is expected to begin operating at the end of the President’s six-year term. It will connect the states of Yucatán, Campeche, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Chiapas and involves 1,500 kilometers of new railway infrastructure for tourists, passengers and cargo.

It is also expected that the Mayan Train will have the capacity to transport 3 million visitors per year and that the construction phase will create 300,000 direct jobs.

Mayan Train

According to the federal government, in the states of Chiapas, Campeche, Tabasco, Yucatán and Quintana Roo, part of the south-southeast region of the country, there are 7.3 million people living in poverty, of which 30% are in poverty extreme.

Another of his arguments is that the southeast of Mexico has an extensive offer of tourist attractions. However, not all tourist destinations have been fully developed, their potential has not been used, and many communities have been marginalized.

In general, the geographical conditions and the connectivity infrastructure available have limited the use of the potential of the region, as well as the opportunities for its inhabitants.

The south-southeast region shows a significant concentration of economic activities in a limited number of urban centers. These centers are distant from each other (on average by 320 km) and, for the most part, distant from the rest of the localities. Furthermore, these urban centers are far from the main productive regions of the country.
