In 2025, Walmex’s growth in Mexico outpaced the market for the 12th consecutive year, yet the company expressed dissatisfaction with its results.
To put this into perspective: the market in which Walmex competes is reflected in the same-store sales indicators of the National Association of Supermarkets and Department Stores (ANTAD).
In Mexico, Walmex’s same-store sales grew 3.3% during the fourth quarter of 2025. This momentum represents an increase of 190 basis points above the corresponding ANTAD indicator for both the fourth quarter and the full year.
Walmex’s Growth in Mexico
Walmex reported revenue of 1.01 trillion pesos in 2025, a year-over-year increase of 5.5%. Meanwhile, net income totaled 49.891 billion pesos, a 7.3% year-over-year decline.
Walmex’s main competitors in the ANTAD are Soriana, Chedraui, and La Comer in the supermarket sector. It also faces strong competition from discount clubs like Costco and leading department stores such as Liverpool and Coppel.
Business Performance
In its latest quarterly report, Walmex noted that it operates in a complex macroeconomic environment. This includes pressure on consumer spending and costs. In its own words, the company focuses on what it can control and on executing the fundamentals well. In the past, this discipline is what has allowed Walmex to consistently emerge stronger from previous cycles.
“Let us be clear: we are not satisfied with the results. They are not good enough. We know we can and must do better, and that conviction is what is driving the actions we are taking today,” the company said.
Walmex is focusing on three major priorities: low prices every day, product availability, and accelerating e-commerce. It operates Walmart Supercenter, Bodega Aurrera, Sam’s Club, and Walmart Express.
Store Expansion
Walmex closed out 2025 with the opening of 186 stores in Mexico and Central America. This figure represents an acceleration compared to last year and marks a record year since 2013. In square meters, this amounts to 212,000 additional square meters of retail floor space—an area equivalent to 1,000 neighborhood-format stores.
For the full year 2025, Walmex reported that the Gross Merchandise Value of its e-commerce business grew by 17.1%. Although this represents continued progress, the company believes this is not yet the level of growth it aspires to in the long term.
