President Donald Trump announced Tuesday a 19% tariff on Indonesia for its products to enter the United States.

Through Truth Social, Trump informed that he reached an agreement with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

In addition, according to Trump, U.S. products will not pay tariffs to enter the Indonesian market.

Tariff on Indonesia

In 2024, U.S. exports of goods to the Indonesian market were $10.202 billion. Conversely, U.S. imports from that Asian nation totaled $29.549 billion.

The United States exports to the Indonesian market mainly soybeans, gas, acyclic hydrocarbons, coal and residues from the starch industry.

What are acyclic hydrocarbons? Substances made only of carbon and hydrogen that are used in fuels (gas, gasoline), plastics and chemicals.

In contrast, Indonesia exports to the U.S. market mainly palm oil, footwear, electrical machinery and appliances, telephones and tires.

Over the past twenty years, Indonesia’s economy has maintained steady growth. In most cases, it has exceeded 5% per year. This expansion has been aided by its demographic structure: 66% of the population is of working age.

Here are U.S. exports of goods to Indonesia, in millions of dollars, according to U.S. Department of Commerce data:

  • 2022: 9,986.
  • 2023: 9,943.
  • 2024: 10,202.

Minerals

Indonesia is a key player in the natural resources market. It produces natural gas, oil and strategic minerals such as nickel. It has also established itself as an essential supplier to Northeast Asia. Among its main destinations are Japan, South Korea and China.

Indonesian exports to the United States, in millions of dollars, are shown below:

  • 2022: 37,263.
  • 2023: 28,101.
  • 2024: 29,549.

Trump statements

In April 2025, the Trump administration imposed a 32% across-the-board tariff on imports from Indonesia, which it subsequently suspended until July.

«Great deal, for everybody, just made with Indonesia. I dealt directly with with their highly respected President. DETAILS TO FOLLOW!!!» he wrote on Truth Social.

He then added: «We have all access to everything. We will pay no tariffs. They are giving us access into Indonesia, which we’ve never had. That’s probably the biggest part of the deal.»
