With nationwide coverage through 820 stores, Soriana highlighted some of its main competitors in Mexico.

Soriana has established itself as one of the largest self-service chains in Mexico. Its presence extends throughout the country, with formats ranging from supermarkets to price clubs and convenience stores.

In addition, it promotes an omnichannel strategy that combines physical stores with digital platforms. It is also betting on own-brand products and strengthening its relationship with national suppliers. 

Behind Walmart and OXXO, Soriana ranks as the third largest food retailer in Mexico.

Soriana’s main competitors 

The self-service market in Mexico is highly competitive, with the participation of national and regional chains, convenience stores, discount and traditional commerce. At year-end 2024, Soriana’s main competitors include:

  • Walmart de México, with formats such as Bodega Aurrerá, Sam’s and Walmex Express.
  • Chedraui, strong in the south of the country, operates stores such as Súper Chedraui, Súper Che and Arteli.
  • La Comer, present in the central region with its Sumesa, Fresko and City Market formats.
  • HEB, active in the north with its Mi Tienda del Ahorro format.
  • Costco, which competes with City Club in the membership format.

Secondary competition

There are also regional chains such as Smart, Casa Ley, El Florido and Calimax. In 2023, Super Dollar General entered the market, with 8 stores in Nuevo León and Coahuila.

The convenience store segment is growing rapidly, with more than 5,700 units and 45% of the sector’s total. 3B, Tiendas Neto, Bodega Aurrerá Express and Supercito stand out. In addition, platforms such as Amazon, Mercado Libre, Rappi and Uber Eats reinforce competition, along with digital supermarkets such as Jüsto and Calii.

Comparative

Walmart de México y Centroamérica obtained revenues of 202,883 million pesos in the second quarter of 2025, an increase of 6% compared to the same period of 2024.

At the same time, the company reported net income of 48.79 billion dollars, a year-on-year increase of 5.9 percent.

Walmart de México y Centroamérica’s revenues in the second quarter of 2025 were higher than Soriana’s revenues in all of 2024. In that year, Soriana totaled 179.112 billion pesos, an increase of 1.7% YoY. Its net income fell 22.5% in 2024, to Ps. 3.909 billion.
