Mexico has a diversified export basket, according to a report by the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

Among its exports are products as varied as melons, hats, guacamole, cars, stoves, silver, handicrafts, tequila and pork.

As small as ornamental fish and as large as tractor-trailers and airframes. As cheap as peanuts or as expensive as jewelry. And as typical as charro hats and as universal as soccer balls.

Export basket

In 2024, Mexico exported products worth 617 billion dollars, an increase of 4% year-on-year. This made it the tenth largest exporter in the world. Its share of world exports of goods was 2.5%, according to WTO data.

Mexico has a broad and diversified trade basket. According to the WTO and IFC, it currently exports 4,700 products and imports 4,973, which covers almost all tradable goods globally. This pattern has shown little change over time.

The Mexican electronics sector stands out for its variety and competitiveness. The diversity of exported products reflects its strong integration into global value chains. This connection has deepened with the United States and Canada, especially after the entry into force of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-Mexico-United States-Canada).

In addition, over the past 10 years, Mexico has moderately diversified its trade portfolio. However, where growth is most noticeable is in the expansion of export markets. This dynamism is particularly visible in the automotive and precision instruments sectors.

Rare exports

Mexico has achieved something that few countries do. It exports more than 100 products that neither the United States nor Canada sells to the world.

The list is diverse. It includes everything from artisanal mezcal to biological insecticides and customized electrical components.

This type of exports reveals a relevant aspect. Mexico not only competes within the North American trading bloc. It has also developed its own niches that reflect its ability to innovate and adapt.

In addition, the country takes advantage of its regional productive advantages. In sectors such as agribusiness and manufacturing, it has been able to generate micro-specialization that distinguishes it in global markets.
