Mexico broke the record for patents granted to Mexicans in October 2025, according to data from the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI).

In 2024, the federal government granted 700 patents to Mexican holders, a record number since 1995, the year registration began.

But on October 8, the IMPI granted 706 of these same patents, breaking a record for a full year.

Patents granted to mexicans

Secretary of Economy Marcelo Ebrard reported that the IMPI added 84 new examiners this year. As a result, the average time to grant a patent was reduced by half a year. In Mexico, this process typically takes around four and a half years.

In addition, Ebrard announced that the «affirmative action» will be applied when the process exceeds five years. The official acknowledged that there is still much to be done. He noted that China has 1.5 million patents, a figure that highlights the challenge facing Mexico.

Patents, he emphasized, are essential for protecting the creations of innovators and entrepreneurs. They also reduce the risk of copying, boost the commercialization of inventions, and facilitate the dissemination of technology.

Industrial property

The IMPI is the operational arm of the Ministry of Economy. Its job is to grant industrial property protection instruments and guarantee the defense of intellectual rights. In doing so, it seeks to curb unfair competition and strengthen innovation.

Between October 2024 and July 2025, the institute granted 11,969 invention titles, including 683 patents to Mexican individuals and 151,542 registrations of distinctive signs. In addition, between October 2024 and August 15, 2025, six declarations of geographical indications were issued.

As part of the “Operation Cleanup” strategy, IMPI carried out 14 operations between November 2024 and August 2025. These operations seized goods valued at 889.75 million pesos.

In this way, IMPI promotes the objectives of the 2025-2030 National Development Plan and Plan Mexico. It also reinforces international commitments in the field of industrial property, promotes innovation, and contributes to the country’s economic and regional development.
