Imported Mexican trucks will receive a 60% discount on tariffs charged by the United States, announced Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard.

“In the case of cargo trucks, it is a tariff imposed by the United States, but what was agreed upon is that there will be a discount based on the components of the truck. Fortunately, the components that the United States has, which we make here in Mexico, exceed 60%, so that will be the discount that will be applied,” said Ebrard.

Ebrard made this statement on November 12 in response to a question from the press at the end of the presentation of the Made in Mexico Distinction to the Mexican Football Federation (FMF).

Imported Mexican trucks

On October 17, 2025, President Donald Trump signed a proclamation imposing a 25% tariff on imports of medium- and heavy-duty trucks. He also included certain spare parts in the measure. He also established a discount system for Mexico and Canada.

On the other hand, Trump authorized a 10% tariff on bus imports. However, in this case, he did not grant discounts to his two North American neighbors.

Both tariffs took effect on November 1.

Finally, the proclamation states that for medium- and heavy-duty trucks that do not qualify for preferential treatment under the USMCA, the tariff will apply to the total value of the vehicle.

Production and market

From January to October 2025, Mexico produced 113,299 heavy-duty vehicles. This figure marked a 36.8% drop compared to the same period in 2024, according to ANPACT data.

For road transport, relocation in North America offers benefits. In fact, it allows for a greater volume of land cargo shipped from Mexico and Canada by truck. This is a sign that has shifted much of the regional integration landscape.

This is particularly reflected in shipments to the United States from Mexico. In addition, volume has increased due to the return of manufacturing to nearby countries.

In 2024, trucks moved 82.5% of the value of land exports from the United States to Canada. They also transported 55.8% of the value of imports from Canada to the United States.

In the case of Mexico, the proportion is even higher. That same year, trucks moved 85.4% of land trade to Mexico and also 85.4% of shipments from Mexico.
