Grupo México Transportes (GMXT) announced on Thursday the purchase of 120 locomotives with an investment of 7.2 billion pesos.

Of that total, 90 locomotives are already operating on the network, with the remaining 30 to be received by the end of this year.

At the end of 2024, the GMXT network was supported by a workforce of more than 11,332 employees, 822 locomotives, and more than 36,935 rail cars.

Of the 822 locomotives, 779 were owned and 43 were under lease. All locomotives are insured.

The company has maintenance contracts for the provision of routine maintenance (inspection) and repair services for locomotives and equipment with Locomotive Manufacturing and Services, Alstom Transport Mexico, and Progress Rail Maintenance de Mexico.

GMXT’s strategic investment plan is to make capital investments of $1.8 billion over the next five years by adding new stations and creating double tracks in some locations, replacing the direct current locomotive fleet with alternating current or LNG locomotives, and digitizing the telecommunications system throughout the network.

GMXT’s historical investments have led to significant operational improvements, and the strategic investment plan has the potential to increase profitability even further.

Its main suppliers of locomotives are Wabtec and Progress Rail Locomotive, and of railcars are Trinity Industries and Greenbrier

The main suppliers of track machinery and car parts are Plasser & Theurer, Nordco, Harsco, Wabtec, Amsted, and Brandt. In addition, Grupo México Transportes acquired the majority of the rail from EVRAZ Rocky Mountain Steel and Sumitomo, companies that meet GMXT’s requirements and specifications.

The new investment will enable the implementation of a work plan with the following objectives:

To increase the share of rail in the land freight market as a sustainable, efficient, and flexible means of transport.

Strengthen the commercial corridors that cross 24 states of the Mexican Republic and connect with the United States of America through six border crossings, including the Ferrobuque that operates from Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz to Mobile, Alabama.

This new fleet will also be essential for serving the Mexican ports of Guaymas, Topolobampo, Mazatlán, Manzanillo, Altamira, Veracruz, and Coatzacoalcos.
