The lack of an Official Mexican Norm (NOM) has slowed down the export of Olinalá lacquerware handicrafts. The Mexican government recognized this limitation and is preparing the publication of the corresponding standard.
Therefore, the objective: the NOM will establish the specifications and processes that these pieces made with the traditional technique of Olinalá, Guerrero, must comply with. It will include raw materials, production methods and cultural factors exclusive to the region. All in accordance with the current Designation of Origin.
Export of Olinalá Lacquer Crafts
According to the government, the issuance of this NOM is necessary to guarantee the recognition and protection of Olinalá Lacquerware as a Denomination of Origin. It will also serve to ensure its preservation, promote its authenticity and shield its quality in the markets.
The Olinalá Designation of Origin was granted in 1994. Later, in 2022, the Official Journal of the Federation published the Declaration of Protection of this artisanal tradition. However, without a specific NOM, quality certification and exports have been limited.
Artisans at risk
Currently, more than 380 artisans face an adverse panorama. The absence of a NOM has allowed the entry of low quality national and Asian imitations. These copies, although visually similar, do not respect the original techniques or meet the standards that distinguish authentic pieces.
Unfair competition has reduced the value of the craft and threatens the preservation of a technique that dates back more than 2,500 years.
Impact of the new standard
The implementation of a specific NOM would represent a turning point. With this regulation, artisans would have legal backing, access to international markets and a certification that guarantees traceability and consumer confidence.
In addition, the standard would increase income and strengthen Olinalá’s economic development. For local creators, it would mean not only preserving their tradition, but also giving them a more competitive place in the global economy.
