The Economic globalization represents an unstoppable trend in the world, the Chinese government stated regarding WTO reform.
“Economic globalization is an unstoppable historical trend that brings both opportunities and challenges,” it said in a statement that began with these words as it outlined its vision for the global landscape and the WTO itself.
Economic Globalization
As discussions intensify, China will present more detailed proposals on various issues of common interest.
The Chinese government noted that some challenges arise from the weakening of multilateral trade through power-based policies. It also pointed out the persistent stagnation facing the current mechanism for resolving disputes among member countries.

Among the problems are unfair competition and the development gap, which undermines the confidence of several nations. Furthermore, the slowness in decision-making prevents global rules from adapting to the constant evolution of the world market.
“Although perspectives may differ, the concerns expressed by Members point to a common underlying challenge: as economic globalization has evolved, it has not delivered benefits that are sufficiently inclusive or broad-based, and the WTO has failed to keep pace with the times,” it warned.
Thus, China considered that improving global economic governance represents the main framework for reforming this international organization.
Trade Multilateralism
In contrast to China’s stance, the United States pursues trade policies based on tariffs and bilateral agreements. This difference in approach reflects a clear fragmentation of global trade and greater regionalization of supply chains.
Currently, the WTO serves as a key platform for global governance and a fundamental pillar of trade multilateralism.
“The fundamental question regarding WTO reform is how rules-based multilateral governance can enable Members to channel economic globalization and achieve better development. There is no simple answer, and the WTO alone cannot provide all the solutions, as domestic reforms must also be undertaken. But this is the broader picture that should guide discussions on WTO reform,” said the Chinese government.
