Canadian Pacific to Operate Hydrogen-Powered Locomotives

Canadian Pacific (CP) announced Friday that it plans to develop the first hydrogen-powered line transport locomotive in North America.

Canadian Pacific’s hydrogen locomotive program will modernize a line transport locomotive with hydrogen fuel cells and battery technology to power the locomotive’s electric traction motors.

Once operational, Canadian Pacific will conduct rail service tests and qualification tests to assess technology readiness for the freight rail sector.

The work builds on CP’s previous experience with testing low-emission locomotive technologies, including biofuels, compressed natural gas, and battery-powered solutions.

Nearly the entire freight locomotive fleet of all North American rail operators consists of diesel-powered units, which represent the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the industry.

Canadian Pacific has long focused on energy saving initiatives as a central component of its sustainability practices.

Since 1990, CP has improved the fuel efficiency of locomotives by more than 40% through a variety of programs and technology deployments designed to improve fuel economy and reduce air emissions.

Applying leading practices, emerging technologies, and building relationships throughout the value chain and industry will continue to be critical as the PB addresses the challenge of climate change.
