Airline industry has 90% of the fleet on land

The airline industry has 90% of its fleet ashore, said a report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), released Wednesday.

In fact, the airline industry bears the brunt of the consequences of the Covid-19 outbreak heavier than other industries, as its «raison d’être» is the transportation of people and goods worldwide for travel, tourism, business and Commerce.

The outlook for aviation worldwide has worsened dramatically with rapid and drastic declines in air travel demand amplified by stringent travel restrictions.

With around 90% of the fleet on land and travel demand reaching almost zero, the reduction in traffic has far exceeded the level observed in events such as SARS and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, putting the aviation industry under extreme stress.

And the prospects for April are expected to further deteriorate. The analysis of the economic impact of the Covid-19 of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) on aviation indicates that in March, when the pandemic was declared on the 11th, the seating capacity worldwide was reduced by 38% in comparison with the same period of 2019.

The number of passengers fell 54% or 198 million. Asia / Pacific recorded the largest drop in passenger numbers at 85 million, followed by Europe and North America at 50 and 35 million, respectively.

Air cargo traffic fell 19% in March, offset by the recent increasing demand for cargo carriers in the transportation of medical supplies.

The decline in the airline industry has caused strong financial pressure on all stakeholders in the sector.

In March alone, airlines are estimated to lose $ 28 billion in revenue, and airports and air navigation service providers have lost about $ 8 billion and $ 824 million, respectively.

Aviation stimulates world economies through employment, trade, and tourism. It also plays a role as a global facilitator in times of crisis, through its vast network and connectivity, vital air cargo services and supply chain support.
