Mexico has set a goal of obtaining more uranium for its electric power industry, with support from the Mexican Geological Service (SGM).
One of the goals of the Ministry of Economy is to build knowledge about potential uranium and associated resources in Mexico through geological and radiometric studies. These studies could provide the raw material for the national electric power industry.
Uranium for the electricity industry
Uranium fuels nuclear reactors, where it undergoes fission, releasing enormous amounts of heat that boil water to generate steam. This high-pressure steam drives turbines connected to generators, producing massive, continuous, and emission-free electricity.

The strategic importance of this resource has been growing. Evidence of this is the inclusion of elements such as copper, lead, potash, rhenium, silicon, and silver. Subsequently, boron, metallurgical coal, phosphate rock, and uranium were included in the U.S. Final List of Critical Minerals 2025. It was published on November 7, 2025, in the Federal Register by the U.S. Geological Survey, following the public and interagency consultations mandated by the Energy Act.
Mineral Exploration
The SGM aims to support the Ministry of Economy by generating basic geological information for Mexico and ensuring the sustainable use of mineral resources in accordance with the objectives of that legislation.
As a result of the actions taken by the SGM, it is worth noting that the update of the “National Geochemical Atlas of Soils” was completed in December 2025.
The Atlas statistically determines the concentrations of 53 chemical elements and establishes reference and anomalous values. This publication is the only one of its kind. It also contributes to efforts to determine the reference values of certain elements in uncontaminated soils.
Other objectives of the SGM include generating and disseminating geological information to support various projects—particularly those related to the use of strategic mineral resources. This information helps promote the country’s sustainable development, as well as the following lines of action:
This Service also produces geological and geochemical maps at a scale of 1:50,000 through fieldwork in areas with mining potential;
Water and Mining
Furthermore, the SGM completed three hydrogeological studies in the Jiménez-Camargo and Parral-Valle del Verano aquifers in Chihuahua, as well as in the Lagunas aquifer in Jalisco, in December 2025. The studies determined that the groundwater supplying communities and cities through extraction wells is of a quality that provides immediate benefits to more than 100,000 people.
