Tiendas 3B entered the Top 10 retail stores in Mexico in 2024, according to Euromonitor data referred to by the United States Department of Agriculture.

This chain of stores is a pioneer and leader in the discount grocery model in Mexico and one of the fastest-growing retail chains in the country, based on its sales and store growth rates.

Top 10 retail stores

Retail trade in Mexico strengthened in 2024. It also advanced thanks to rising real wages, low inflation, and record levels of consumer confidence.

Real wages recorded their highest increase in two decades. At the same time, this momentum boosted purchasing power and stimulated retail sales.

Meanwhile, discount stores are growing rapidly. They also serve price-sensitive consumers looking for more affordable everyday products. Their expansion is supported by the opening of new points of sale, especially in urban areas. Likewise, preference for private labels offering low prices and better quality is gaining ground.

In 2024, Walmart topped the list of the Top 10 retailers in Mexico, followed by OXXO, Soriana, Chedraui, Casa Ley, Tiendas 3B, HEB, Grupo La Comer, and COSTCO.

A year earlier, Calimax and Merza appeared on that list.

The Mexican retail sector is divided between modern and traditional commerce. The latter accounts for 56% of the food, beverage, and fresh produce market. This is due to price sensitivity and loyalty to local suppliers.

Consumers still prefer in-person shopping. At the same time, street markets remain an essential part of the country’s commercial culture. In this channel, cash dominates transactions. However, the banking system is making progress in incorporating traditional retailers into card payments and bank transfers.

BBB Foods

From 2021 to 2024, the total revenue of BBB Foods Inc., the parent company of Tiendas 3B, grew strongly. In addition, it advanced at a compound annual rate of 35.5% and reached 57.4 billion pesos in 2024.

The name 3B – “Bueno, Bonito y Barato” (Good, Beautiful and Cheap) – reflects its mission. At the same time, it sums up its commitment to offering acceptable quality products at low prices for consumers on a limited budget.

Meanwhile, its store network also expanded. It grew from 1,249 units in January 2021 to 2,772 at the end of 2024. This implies a compound annual growth rate of 22.1 percent.
