Electricity consumption in Mexico grows 1.8%

Electricity consumption in Mexico grew at an annual rate of 1.8% in 2024, according to the 2025 Electricity Sector Development Plan.

This consumption has increased steadily, driven by manufacturing and urban growth.

Final electricity consumption represents the energy used by different users in the electricity sector. It is divided into six tariff groups: residential, commercial, services, agricultural pumping, medium-sized businesses, and large industry.

To calculate it, all energy traded within the National Electric System (SEN) is included. This covers basic supply, qualified supply—which includes qualified users, last resort users, and market participants—as well as energy delivered to remotely supplied load centers.

Electricity consumption in Mexico

In 2024, the National Electric System (SEN) recorded final consumption of 304,011 GWh, an increase of 1.8% over the previous year. The number of users with electric service also grew by 1.7%, reaching 49 million end users.

Medium-sized companies and large industries accounted for 60.6% of total consumption, although they represented only 0.9% of total users. In contrast, the residential sector accounted for 89.2% of users, but consumed only 27.1% of the total. The remaining 12.4% was distributed among the commercial (5.9%), agricultural pumping (5.2%), and services (1.3%) sectors, reflecting the diversity of the country’s electricity demand.

Demand and consumption

Over the last 15 years, the electricity sector has faced a variety of challenges. The 2013 energy reform changed the production chain. In 2016, the Wholesale Electricity Market (MEM) was launched. The health contingency of 2020 disrupted supply chains and consumption patterns. Recent geopolitical conflicts have affected global energy systems, driving the relocation of manufacturing companies. In addition, the increase in demand for goods and services following the pandemic has set new trends.

In recent years, climatic phenomena such as hurricanes, cold fronts, heat waves, El Niño, and La Niña have intensified the seasonal variability of electricity consumption. Therefore, this section describes the annual evolution of electricity in Mexico, from final consumption, losses, and foreign trade to distributed generation and gross consumption in the sector.
