August 2025 marked the first impact of tariffs on Brazilian exports to the United States, with a double-digit drop.
Sales of Brazilian products to the US market fell at an annual rate of 18.5% that month, to US$2.7622 billion.
On July 30, 2025, the US government issued an Executive Order imposing a 50% tariff on certain Brazilian exports. However, 44.6% of Brazilian sales to the United States were excluded from this measure, including key products such as aircraft, cellulose pulp, orange juice, oil, and iron ore.
In contrast, imports of US goods to Brazil totaled US$3.9935 billion, a year-on-year increase of 4.6%, according to data from the Ministry of Development, Industry, and Foreign Trade (MDIC).

According to preliminary data, 35.9% of Brazilian exports to the United States are subject to the new 50% tariff, while 44.6% are exempt from the increased tariff (without prejudice to the 10% base tariff that remains in effect).

Brazilian exports now subject to the 50% tariff amounted to US$14.5 billion in 2024, while exports now subject to the base tariff of 10% amounted to US$18 billion in 2024.
In addition, the July 30 Executive Order granted a grace period for the tariff increase. Goods shipped from Brazil within seven days of the date of issuance of the order were not subject to the tariff increase, provided they met the conditions specified therein.
From January to August 2025, Brazilian exports of products to the United States grew 1.6% annually, to $26.576 billion.
Conversely, Brazil’s purchases of products originating in the United States totaled $29.9697 billion, an increase of 11.4%.
On August 6, 2025, the Brazilian government, through the MDIC and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, formally requested consultations with the United States under the WTO Dispute Settlement System.
