President Donald Trump announced a 90-day extension to the imposition of a 30% tariff on imports into the United States of products originating in Mexico.

The tariff was originally scheduled to take effect on August 1.

As a result, Mexico will continue to be subject to the following tariffs during this period:

  • 25% on emergency fentanyl.
  • 25% on cars.
  • 50% on steel, aluminum and copper.

Extension of tariffs to Mexico

Trump’s announcement came Thursday morning following a telephone conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

So far, Trump has not issued an executive order on the matter.

Trump called his conversation with Sheinbaum “very fruitful.” “More and more, we are getting to know each other and understand each other,” Trump added, in a post on social networks.

The U.S. applies these emergency tariff exemptions to Mexico: imports that apply for and qualify for tariff relief under the USMCA.

According to U.S. Census Bureau data, approximately 50% of Mexican products, by value, entered the U.S. under the USMCA in 2024.

Current rates for Mexico related to the emergency tariff:

  • 25% for products that do not apply for or qualify for the USMCA tariff exemption.
  • 10% for potash imports that do not apply for or qualify for the USMCA tariff exemption.

The U.S. president argued that the complexities of an agreement with Mexico are somewhat different from those of other nations, due to both border issues and assets.

Tariff agreements

In recent days, Trump has announced that the U.S. will set tariffs on several countries, including the following:

  • European Union: 15 percent.
  • Japan: 15 percent.
  • South Korea: 15 percent.
  • Indonesia: 19 percent.
  • Philippines: 19 percent.
  • Vietnam: 20 percent.
  • India: 25 percent.
  • Brazil: 50 percent.

Canada

Canada received formal notification of the tariff. The measure will be applied under the Reciprocal IEEPA scheme, with a 35 percent rate that will take effect on August 1, 2025, if no prior agreement is reached.

For now, there is uncertainty. It is unclear whether this new tariff will coexist with or replace the emergency fentanyl tariff.

In addition, an exemption is expected. Goods originating from the USMCA could be left out of the measure. However, such confirmation has not yet been made official.
