Two organizations in Mexico, CAAAREM and Concamin, are working towards the signing of an agreement to combat smuggling and undervaluation.
The progress towards this agreement was highlighted by Miguel Cos Nesbitt, president of CAAAREM.
Cos Nesbitt held a working meeting with the head of Mexico’s National Customs Agency (ANAM), Rafael Marín Mollinedo.
CAAAREM and Concamin
In a press release, Cos Nesbitt informed that they are working with the most smuggling-sensitive Chambers of the Concamin, among them those related to textiles, clothing and footwear, in order to sign a collaboration agreement.
The purpose of this agreement is to study the phenomenon of smuggling and undervaluation in these sectors in order to generate joint proposals to combat this cancer that threatens the national economy.
Previous agreements
To strengthen tax collection and improve national security, the Mexican government created the National Customs Agency of Mexico. The decree was published on July 14, 2021 in the Official Journal of the Federation. Since then, this new entity operates as a decentralized body of the Ministry of Finance.
The Agency has technical, operational and administrative autonomy. In addition, it has tax and customs functions, which allows it to issue resolutions and act as an authority in the matter.
On the other hand, on December 10, 2021, the Procuraduría Fiscal de la Federación and CAAAREM signed a collaboration agreement. The agreement seeks to curb smuggling and reduce corruption in foreign trade.
Through this agreement, it was agreed to design compliance programs. It also includes offering workshops, training and seminars focused on tax and customs issues. Customs agents will receive alerts on risks and penalties for infractions.
Finally, another measure was taken on December 7, 2020. Several laws were reformed to strengthen surveillance at customs and ports. With this, the Ministry of the Navy assumed responsibilities previously held by the former Ministry of Communications and Transportation. Among them, maritime security and port supervision.
