WTO to elect Acting Director-General

The World Trade Organization (WTO) foresees the election of an interim Director General, once Roberto Azevêdo, who currently holds that position, leaves on August 31.

The WTO is going through a crucial period in which it can weaken further as an institution or it can carry out a reform that not only enables it to be more viable, but also boosts the weak global economy through the growth of trade flows from products and services.

In general, achieving reform in the WTO is complex, since it requires the consensus of its 164 members, with a wide diversity of interests. Therefore, this series of changes is equated with the movement of a large ship, in which turning takes time, which in the case of this organization is equivalent to years.

In mid-May, Azevêdo announced his resignation as CEO, which will take effect on August 31, 2020.

Currently, one of the three main pillars on which the WTO is based is not fully functioning: the dispute settlement system, with the Appellate Body inoperative. The other two are, on the one hand, the administration of the agreements derived from the Uruguay Round, and on the other, the negotiation of new disciplines and the reduction of tariffs and other barriers to trade.

The Mexican Jesús Seade, the British Liam Fox, the Saudi Mohammad Maziad Al-Tuwaijri, the Kenyan Amina C. Mohamed, the Nigerian Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Egyptian Abdel-Hamid Mamdouh, participate in the election to occupy the position of Director General. Moldovan Tudor Ulianovschi and South Korean Yoo Myung-hee.

The Organization is governed by the governments of its Members. All major decisions are made by all Members, either by their Ministers (who meet at least once every two years) or by their ambassadors or delegates (who meet regularly in Geneva).
