U.S. analyzes exports of artificial intelligence (AI) technology

The Department of Commerce (DOC) is requesting information on barriers to U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) technology exports.

The International Trade Administration (ITA) is seeking broad input from all stakeholders-including U.S. industry, researchers, academia, and civil society-on potential opportunities and challenges to increasing the competitiveness of these exports.

Overall, the DOC has made it a top priority to boost U.S. innovation and global competitiveness in critical and emerging technologies such as AI.

Already, consultation began with the publication this Monday of a notice in the U.S. Federal Register.

Recognizing the growing importance of artificial intelligence and the impact it can have in transforming the economy, industries and society, ITA is soliciting public comments to obtain information on the current global AI marketplace and stakeholder concerns regarding international AI policies, regulations and other measures that may affect U.S. exports of AI technologies.

This stakeholder input will provide the Department of Commerce with a greater understanding of the AI landscape as AI affects existing economic sectors and industries, creates new areas of innovation, and makes its way into global trade discussions.

Artificial intelligence

The Department of Commerce is focused on consolidating U.S. leadership in emerging technologies, including AI, to drive U.S. innovation and global competitiveness.

The United States also seeks to promote the development of innovative and reliable AI systems that respect human rights, democratic values, and are designed to enhance privacy protections.

The ITA seeks to promote these ideals through stakeholder engagement and with the goal of supporting U.S. economic interests.

Thus, in support of its mission to create prosperity by strengthening the international competitiveness of U.S. industry, promoting trade and investment, and ensuring fair trade and compliance with trade laws and agreements, ITA solicits information from stakeholders on the global AI market landscape.

This information will be used to inform ITA’s efforts to promote an international environment that supports U.S. AI research and innovation, opens markets for U.S. AI technologies, and enhances the U.S. technological advantage in AI.

Among the companies developing artificial intelligence in the United States are: Apple, Amazon, Microsoft Corporation, Google, Facebook, Facebook, IBM, Intel, CRM, Salesforce, NVIDIA, Anki, AiBrain, and Banjo.
