Tequila and mezcal are protected in the United Kingdom

Tequila and mezcal Mexico and the United Kingdom were protected as part of an Agreement of mutual recognition and protection of denomination of origin of spirits between both countries.

The names of spirits of both parties received protection by virtue of an Agreement concluded between Mexico and the European Union (EU), published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on July 21, 1997.

The instrument signed aims to guarantee the continuity of the recognition and protection of the spirits denominations of both parties, once the transition period for the United Kingdom’s departure from the EU has concluded, on December 31 of this year.

The Secretary of Economy, Graciela Márquez, and the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Mexico, Corin Robertson, signed the Agreement this Monday.

The document guarantees the protection and recognition of the six denominations of origin of spirits in Mexico: Tequila, Mezcal, Bacanora, Raicilla, Sotol and Charanda. It also includes the United Kingdom denominations: Scotch Whiskey, Irish Whiskey, Uisce Beatha Eireannach / Irish Whiskey, Irish Cream and Irish Poteen / Irish Poitín.

Among the commitments of the agreement, it stands out to facilitate and promote the bilateral trade of spirits under the principles of non-discrimination and reciprocity; guarantee that the protected names are reserved exclusively for the spirits of each Party to the agreement, and that these can only be used in accordance with the regulations of the country from which they originate.

In this sense, the agreement will protect spirits against usurpation, promoting respect for intellectual property rights and the prestige of Mexican appellations of origin abroad. This will benefit both producers and consumers, and discourage unfair competition.

According to the Ministry of Economy, the United Kingdom is a major export destination for Mexican spirits. It is the seventh world importer of Tequila (after the United States, Germany, Spain, France, Japan and Canada), and the third importer of Mezcal (only behind the United States and Spain). This new agreement fosters certainty for the export of all Mexican spirits with designation of origin.
