Spending on social development programs in Mexico

Spending on social development programs, such as education, public health and social security, totaled 3 trillion 071.3 billion pesos in Mexico during 2021.

With this, this spending represents 59.9% of total programmable spending.

On the other hand, economic development spending totaled 1 trillion 600,300 million pesos, representing 31.2% of total programmable spending.

According to preliminary figures, spending for agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting totaled 51.9 billion nominal pesos, up from 46.2 billion pesos in 2020.

At the same time, expenditures for residential and community development amounted to P256.0 billion nominal, compared to P251.6 billion in 2020.

Social development

For a point of comparison: during 2020, spending on social development programs totaled 2 trillion 856.7 billion pesos (representing 64.2% of total programmable spending), while spending on economic development stood at 1 trillion 167.3 billion pesos (representing 26.2% of total programmable spending).

In particular, spending for agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting amounted to a nominal P46.2 billion, compared to P59.7 billion in 2019.

Expenditures for residential and community development amounted to P251.6 billion nominal, compared to P247.7 billion in 2019.

Overall, budget expenditures during 2021 increased as follows, each in nominal terms and compared to 2020: public sector net budget expenditures rose 12.4%, public sector net programmable budget expenditures (excluding Pemex‘s physical investment) advanced 14. 3%, net programmable budget expenditure increased by 15.2%, net non-programmable budget expenditure increased by 4.3%, the financial cost of public sector debt increased by 0.1%, and public sector expenditure on economic and social development increased by 37.1% and 7.5%, respectively.
