Seaports: Mexico moves forward with works

Mexico‘s Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) reported progress on several expansions of the country’s seaports.

In order to promote the expansion of port facilities, facilitate intermodal transport and boost international trade, the Ministry of the Navy (Semar) continues with the construction of the dock and dredging of the southwest channel in the port of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán.

In particular, this work consists of the extension of 520 meters (m) in the southwest channel to a depth of 17.0 m, and the construction of a dock 352 m long and 29 m wide, founded on reinforced concrete piles.

The construction of a culvert and a 10.2 ha yard is also being considered. As of May 31, 2022, the entire project had a physical progress of 5 percent.

On the other hand, the Semar began construction of the Maritime Traffic Building in the port of Tampico, Tamaulipas, whose percentage of physical progress as of May 31, 2022 was 70 percent, and of the infrastructure for the Naval Port Protection Unit (UNAPROP), which will reorganize the use of the facilities for the performance of activities, functions and the historical archive, which reached a percentage of physical progress as of May 31, 2022 of 45 percent.

Meanwhile, in the port of Altamira, Tamaulipas, the Semar continued the construction dredging works in the port, which will increase competitiveness and improve efficiency in ship maneuvers, and in the total cost of the logistics chain.

The amount invested from September 1 to May 31, 2022 was 33 million pesos, the percentage of physical progress as of May 31, 2022 was 10.3 percent.

Seaports

As of May 31, 2022, the progress in the port of Veracruz, Veracruz, with respect to the reinforcement of the Vehicular Overpass of the Libramiento Ferroviario a Santa Fe was 57 percent.

The construction of secondary roads for access to the bulk mineral and specialized terminals was 67% complete; and the construction of the dock for small vessels for local fishing services was 66% complete.

Finally, in the port of Guaymas, Sonora, Semar will carry out works to facilitate bulk storage.  The sector is awaiting the award and execution of the work. The project has been completed and it is estimated that the works will begin in the third quarter of 2022. The total investment amounts to 510.5 million pesos.
