New energy label debuts in the European Union

The European Union reported that it put in place a new energy label to help reduce its energy bills and carbon footprint.

Broadly speaking, the energy label is a widely recognized hallmark of household products, such as light bulbs, televisions or washing machines, and for more than 25 years it has allowed consumers to be better informed when choosing

As of Monday, March 1, 2021, a new version of the EU’s widely recognized energy label will begin to be applied in all online stores and retailers.

The new labels will initially apply to four product categories: refrigerators and freezers, dishwashers, washing machines, and televisions (and other external displays).

On September 1 there will be new labels for bulbs and lamps with fixed light sources, and in the coming years it will be the turn of other products.

As more and more products achieve the A +, A ++ or A +++ classification under the current scale, the most important change is to go back to a simpler scale (A-G). This scale is more stringent and is designed so that very few products can initially achieve an «A» rating, leaving room for more efficient products in the future.

Energy label

The most energy efficient products currently on the market will normally be labeled ‘B’, ‘C’ or ‘D’ from now on.

The labels will include several new elements, such as a QR link to a Union-wide database that will allow consumers to access more information about the product.

As of March 1, a number of ecodesign rules will also come into effect, in particular on repairability and the obligation that manufacturers continue to have spare parts for several years after the products have ceased to be marketed.

In addition to readjusting the energy efficiency class of the product in question, the format of the new label is different, as it includes clearer and more modern icons.

As in the previous labels, the new labels do not only include the energy efficiency class.

In the case of a washing machine, for example, you can see at a glance the number of liters of water per cycle, the duration of a cycle and the energy consumption, all measured for a standardized program.

Another significant change is the introduction of a QR code at the top right of the new labels.

By scanning the QR code, consumers can access additional information about the product model; for example, data related to dimensions, specific characteristics or test results, depending on the apparatus.
