In 2019, the top 20 bilateral connections were intra-regional, that is, within Europe and within East and Southeast Asia.

Over the past 10 years, the ranking order among the most connected economies in shipping has remained almost unchanged, with China well ahead of the others.

During the last year, the United States of America showed a rapid increase in its connectivity, which allowed the country to climb one rank, before Malaysia.
