Maersk gives more options in cold chain route for fresh fruit

Maersk announced more options for transport on the cold chain route for fresh fruit from the Black Sea and the Mediterranean to Central Russia.

On December 21, 2020, the first refrigerated containers leaving Mersin, Turkey, were shipped from the port of Novorossiysk en route to the Selyatino terminal in Moscow on a train operated by Ruscon (part of the Delo Group), one of the main Russian container shipping companies.

Two days later, the containers arrived at the Selyatino terminal in Moscow and were safely delivered to final recipients, Maersk said in a statement.

In the past, imported containers were delivered by road or disassembled in Novorossiysk and then transported inland in vans.

This was the first time that Maersk pioneered the comprehensive delivery of fresh fruit from the eastern Mediterranean to Moscow by rail and in the same containers that had been unloaded at the Russian port.

Zsolt Katona, Maersk Eastern Europe CEO, said this new intermodal cold chain solution is enabled by Russian Railways JSC, which provides rail infrastructure and business support for this new cold chain corridor.

Reefer specialist Polar Star LTD provides the container power supply throughout the train journey.

The new logistics solution is designed to grow the Russian food market, through better supply chain performance and less handling of perishable fruits.

Maersk

The company expects this new intermodal service to transform the refrigerated cold chain from the Middle East and the Mediterranean to Central Russia, representing more than 50,000 containers per year.
