KIA recalls nearly 300,000 cars and SUVs from America

South Korean automaker Kia is recalling 294,756 vehicles in the US market, after the US government warned that the engines could stall or catch fire.

The estimated percentage defective for that universe is 1 percent.

Korean companies, now largely merged into Hyundai-Kia, have grown strongly in recent years.

The recall covers certain 2012 and 2013 Sorento SUVs, 2012-2015 Forte and Forte Koup cars, 2011-2013 Optima Hybrid cars, 2014 and 2015 Soul SUVs, and 2012 Sportage SUVs.

Last week, the company and its parent, Hyundai Motor Co., agreed to a record $ 210 million civil fine after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported they did not recall 1.6 million vehicles. for engine problems in a timely manner.

The Hyundai affiliate said that «based on NHTSA’s recommendation» it had made the «decision to recall certain Kia vehicles as a preventive measure to mitigate any potential fire risks.

Hyundai recalled 129,000 US vehicles on Friday because connecting rod bearings can wear out prematurely, which over time can result in engine damage and increase fire risks.
