Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec: its goal

Mexico‘s Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec has among its main goals to reach a rail movement of 500,000 TEUs in its first three years.

Carlos Alberto Gómez Martínez, general director of Port Development and Administration of the Ministry of the Navy (Semar), stated this goal while participating this Friday in the National Congress of Customs Agents in Boca del Río, Veracruz.

To this end, Gómez Martínez informed that railroad lines are being rehabilitated.

In particular, the Z line, which is the one that goes from Salina Cruz to a place called Medias Aguas, Coatzacoalcos, runs a little more than 300 kilometers.

«For the time being, the rehabilitation of the FA line, which is the one that goes from Medias Aguas, Coatzacoalcos, to Palenque, is going to join with the Mayan Train», added Gómez Martínez at the event, organized by the Confederation of Customs Agents Associations of the Mexican Republic (CAAAREM).

These lanes exist, only their capacities were limited to 15 or 20 kilometers, and now the goal is to run between 50 and 80 kilometers for cargo.

«All this is an integral development of the railroad that will communicate the ports, and this is what is already beginning to be multimodal, in addition to the existing road system,» he said.

Interoceanic Corridor

As part of the National Development Plan, in 2019, the Mexican government initiated the Development Plan for the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

The Isthmus of Tehuantepec Development Plan includes the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Interoceanic Corridor, which was created on June 14, 2019 and is expected to be operational by the end of 2024.

Overall, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Interoceanic Corridor will consist of several modes of transportation and an investment of 8 billion pesos, in part for the rehabilitation of railroad tracks for cargo and passengers, the expansion of the Salina Cruz-Coatzacoalcos highway, and the expansion and modernization of the ports of Salina Cruz and Coatzacoalcos and the Salina Cruz and Minatitlán refineries.

The Development Plan for the Isthmus of Tehuantepec includes a gas pipeline project to supply domestic companies and consumers.

Along the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Interoceanic Corridor, economic zones will be created to attract private sector investment and will guarantee the supply of energy, water, digital connectivity and other basic inputs to meet the needs of businesses and the working population, according to the federal government’s plans.
