Bimbo advances in its goal of using renewable electricity

The Mexican company Grupo Bimbo advanced in 2020 in its goal of reaching 100% renewable electricity by 2025.

The company has installed solar roofs in most of its plants in Mexico and Chile, where it has already achieved 90% sustainability for a total of 20 MW, including its distribution center, which has the most solar roof in Mexico and that It was inaugurated in December 2020.

In particular, this 2.2 MW system will allow the Group to supply 100% of the energy consumed at the site, which translates into a benefit of 1,300 tons of CO2 not emitted per year.

In addition, actions focused on improving the safety and well-being of Grupo Bimbo employees and consumers include the launch of health campaigns, check-ups, medical check-ups and the promotion of sports activities, such as the Global Energy race, which went virtual in 2020 and had more than 300,000 participants in 127 countries.

Since 2018, Grupo Bimbo has joined the RE100 initiative, led by The Climate Group in conjunction with the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), with the commitment to operate with 100% renewable electricity by 2025.

Grupo Bimbo’s sustainable business model has also allowed it to be part of the Sustainability Index of the Mexican Stock Exchange since its creation in 2011 and of the Emerging Index FTSE4Good since 2017.

Subsequently, on October 30, 2012, the company inaugurated “Piedra Larga”, the largest wind farm in the food industry worldwide, with which it generates practically 100% of the electrical energy consumed by Grupo Bimbo in Mexico.

With an installed power of 90 megawatts, the park has been able to supply, until then, the electricity consumption of 65 facilities (production plants and other operation centers) of the company.

Finally, in 2018, the company became the first company in Mexico to produce Clean Energy Certificates for Distributed Generation.

This initiative will contribute to reaching Mexico’s clean energy goal for 2050, which consists of using 50% of clean energy for that year.

In addition, it will help qualified users and companies in the new Mexican wholesale market that have the obligation to buy at least 5% of their energy from clean sources in 2018

For Pilar Planeta, the company has as goals for 2025:

  • 100% Renewable Electric Energy.
  • 100% recyclable, biodegradable or compostable packaging.
  • 50% reduction in food waste.
  • Gradual replacement of HFC refrigerants with natural or low-warming potential refrigerants that meet the 2020 goals for energy efficiency, water and waste recycling and deforestation.
  • 100% Paper and cardboard from certified sustainable sources.
