Banana exports from Mexico rise in 1H20

Banana exports from Mexico totaled 141.1 million dollars in the first half of 2020, a year-on-year increase of 1%, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture.

Bananas are grown in all tropical regions and are of fundamental importance to the economies of many developing countries.

In terms of gross production value, bananas are the fourth most important food crop in the world, after rice, wheat and corn.

During the first half of the year, Mexican banana exports totaled 277,100 tons, a reduction of 3.5% year-on-year.

As a staple food, bananas, including plantains and other types of cooking bananas, contribute to the food security of millions of people in much of the developing world and, because they are marketed in local markets, provide income and employment for populations. rural.

The sanitary status of Mexico has allowed the management of trade agreements to place the national food production in new markets.

Derived from the signing of the Protocol of Phytosanitary Requirements for the Export of fresh banana fruit from Mexico to China, in January 2020, the first shipment of bananas to that destination was given the starting signal.

During the first quarter of 2020, 58 tons of bananas originating from Chiapas and Tabasco were shipped.

Derived from the negotiations carried out by this Secretariat with the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China, Phytosanitary Requirements have been concluded and established, which are indicated in the Protocol of Phytosanitary Requirements for the Export of fresh banana fruit from Mexico to China.

Banana exports from Mexico to the world have climbed during the last decade, from 77.2 million dollars in 2009 to 300.9 million dollars in 2019, according to data from the Ministry of the Economy.
