The companies Autlán, Grupo México, Industrias Peñoles, Newmont-Peñasquito, Fresnillo plc and their water projects and Coeur Mining participate in water management projects that were highlighted by the Mining Chamber of Mexico (Camimex) in its 2020 Sustainability Report.

Water management

Autlán operates five treatment plants in the Mining Units: Molango, Naopa and Nonoalco.

During 2019, about 6,000 people in 10 communities had access to sources of water use thanks to the Social Investment Platform.

Autlán conducts participatory monitoring with the community to observe water quality and generate sustainable solutions.

The company has an agreement with the Intermunicipal Metropolitan Agency for Drinking Water, Sewerage, Sanitation and Related Services of the municipalities of Cerro de San Pedro, San Luis Potosí and Soledad de Graciano Sánchez (INTERAPAS) for the operation of a wastewater treatment plant with the aim of reducing well water consumption in the Electrolytic Zinc Refinery.

The treated water is used in the refinery processes and for irrigation. With this plant, the Refinery has reduced its well water consumption by 90%, benefiting 32 thousand inhabitants of the surrounding neighborhoods with 1.6 million m3 of clean water that they stop consuming.

Industrias Peñoles

This company operates two Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP); one to purify the sewage generated by the company and the second to treat wastewater from the sanitary drainage of the City of Torreón Coahuila.

The company assigned its rights to the water wells to the Municipal Water and Sanitation System for use for the benefit of the population. In Zacatecas, Minera Madero, the first mine in Latin America to use a metallurgical process designed to use only treated municipal sewage, thus helping to reduce the degree of overexploitation of aquifers, freeing water for human use and treating more wastewater than otherwise it would be being arranged in the environment.

The use of 320 liters per second of municipal wastewater is equivalent to releasing drinking water for 184,000 inhabitants who consume 150 liters per day.

Newmont-Peñasquito

Through Participatory Water Monitoring, the conditions of the aquifers in the region are evaluated together with volunteer members of the communities, specialized academic institutions and civil organizations. During 2019, 9 community groups were integrated and 48 monitoring was carried out.
